Safety And Environment

Every organization has an obligation not only to operate in a manner that society and its community find acceptable, but also to, wherever possible, enrich both. At Maple Leaf Foods, we take this obligation seriously.

Health & Safety

The directors, officers and employees of Maple Leaf Foods are dedicated to the elimination of occupational injuries and illnesses in all our facilities. We believe that a "zero" target, while challenging, is attainable.

We vigorously pursue this goal through a broad based approach to Health & Safety that includes:

  • Well publicized and easily understood policies
  • Proactive awareness and skills training
  • Effective safety supervision
  • Ongoing compliance and best practice audits, complete with follow-up monitoring
  • Managerial compensation tied to low injury rates
  • Recognition of important safety milestones
  • Regular reporting to senior management and the Board of Directors

Environment

We are committed to a sustainable environment wherever we do business and we achieve this through the maintenance of a comprehensive environmental program. This program enhances the awareness and knowledge of all environmental aspects of our operations. We set high benchmarks for Maple Leaf Foods' operations in accordance with good environmental practice and current regulatory initiatives.

Sound environmental management is the direct responsibility of each of Maple Leaf Foods' site managers. It is monitored by the President of the related business unit and the Vice President, Corporate Engineering. Our environmental performance is reported on and discussed with a Board of Directors sub committee on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
