Shopping For Meat
According to Health Canada’s Food
Guide, we should eat 2-3 servings of lean meat each day.
What’s a serving? The answer lies in the palm of your hand!
A serving is 50-100 grams cooked: about the size of your palm, or a deck of
playing cards. To meet your daily nutritional requirements, it is important to
note that the amount of uncooked meat you need to start with will depend on the
cut you choose.
| Here are recommendations for how much uncooked meat you will need to start
with: |
-
Boneless meat (ground meat, stew meat, boneless roasts or chops) is 110-150
grams per serving
-
Bone-in meat (steaks, chops, chicken pieces) is 150-230 grams per serving.
-
Bony meat (ribs) is 340-454 grams per serving

| Shopping: Food Safety |
-
Take
food safety knowledge with you to the grocery store. Keep these important tips
in mind to prepare safe meals at home:
-
Make grocery shopping the last errand of your day so you can get food home and
refrigerated as soon as possible.
-
While shopping, make the meat aisle your last stop to keep meats cold as long
as possible. In your cart, keep meat separate from other ready-to-eat foods.
-
Make sure meat is wrapped tightly with no rips or holes in the packaging. This
prevents leakage and keeps microorganisms at bay.
-
If you decide to pack your own groceries, separate meats from your other
groceries.
-
Store the meat you purchase properly: groceries that require refrigeration
should be put in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible after they are
purchased.
